Your phone or iPad has a Wi-Fi network saved, but you don’t know the password and you need it for another device, can you see the Wi-Fi password somewhere in the settings on your phone or iPad?
The short answer is no, the iOS operating system hides the password for the Wi-Fi account. There are a few options you have in case you cannot remember the wifi password. If you have a Mac computer you can find the Wi-Fi password in the Keychain Access app on the Mac. Option 2 You can share the password from an iOS device (iPhone or iPad) to another iOS device, or finally there might be a sticker on the bottom of your router with login information to the Wi-Fi. If you received your router from your internet company you should be able to call them to retrieve the Wi-Fi login.
Find Wi-Fi password in Mac Keychain Access App
To find the password in the Keychain Access app first check the phone to make sure Keychain sharing is turned on.
- Open the settings app from the home screen of your iPhone or iPad
- Click on the iCloud option at the top of the screen
- Select iCloud
- Scroll down to Keychain and verify it is On if not turn it on
After you have verified Keychain sharing is turned on, go to your Mac that uses the same iCloud account. Open spotlight search by pressing Command + Space bar. Search for Keychain Access and open the app. Use the search box in Keychain Access at the top right of the window to search for the Wi-Fi network by name. You can then click on the Wi-Fi network name to open the item. From the attributes tab press the check box next to show password. It will then ask you to give your computer credentials and then it will show you the Wi-Fi account password.
Share password to another iOS device.
Apple released the ability to share Wi-Fi passwords between iPhones and iPads with the release of iOS 11 in Fall 2017. As long as you are on iOS 11 or newer you will be able to share your Wi-Fi password with another iPhone or iPad.
To share your password with another device, first go through the process of connecting that device to Wi-Fi like you normally would.
- Open the settings app
- Go to Wi-Fi
- Choose the network you want to connect to from the Choose A Network… List
- Wait once at the Enter Password screen
Now with your other device or friends phone waiting at the enter password screen follow these steps.
- Unlock your phone
- Hold your phone next to your friends phone or iPad
- A popup should appear at the bottom of the screen asking if you want to share your password.
- Press the Send Password button.
The popup on your phone should then say it’s complete, you can press the Done button and you are all set you have successfully shared your Wi-Fi password.
What do I do if I cannot access my router and need to know my Wi-Fi password?
If all of the above fails many internet service providers such as AT&T put a sticker on the bottom of their router with the Wi-Fi name and password. Or if you received your router from your internet service provider you can usually call them to get the password. If you purchased your own router you can try logging into the IP address of the router and then checking the Wi-Fi settings to see the password, or you can reset the router to factor default settings.
