When you connect your TV to HomeKit you get you TV as a device inside the Home App, as well as the Remote App. This also gives you Siri functionality with your TV.

In the Home app you get the following functionality.

  • The ability to turn off/on the TV
  • The ability to select which input the TV is on.

In the the Remote App you get a d-pad, play/pause button, back button and info button.

What is the difference between HomeKit and AirPlay 2?

Homekit is how you control the device through the Home app on your iOS device. This gives you the ability to turn on and off, change inputs on the TV and change some other settings.

AirPlay on the other hand is for playing content. AirPlay is equivalent to ChromeCast that google offers. You can play content over AirPlay to an AirPlay compatible device either a TV or speaker system.

Using AirPlay you can mirror your entire iPhone or iPad onto your television using a TV that supports AirPlay or the Apple TV. You can also play video through apps like Netflix and HBO. You can also play music through AirPlay from apps like Spotify or Apple music and you can even share photos or slideshows from your Phone.
